BIOMATERIALS & ARCHITECTURE

1. Lisbon Spice Rack
Collab. Rain Wu
Lisbon
Bauhaus of the Sea Sails residency
2025

A Spice rack designed to showcase foraged foods from the Mar da Palha bioregion of the Tagus River.
It mimics underwater movements. floating. swaying. gently entangled.
The floating planes are topped with a biomaterial made of Agar and Oyster shells, which support the oyster bioceramic bowls.

Oystermics
Biolab Lisboa
Bauhaus of the Seas Sails Residency, 2024

Research and Development of bioceramics made of oyster shells and algae. water resistant. breathable. strong.
Varied aggregate sizes and biopigments bring texture and life to these pieces.

“A flor do Azulejo, a cor do Tejo”, 2025
Loc: CAM Gulbenkian
Bauhaus of the Seas Sails Residency

The final exhibition and pieces to conclude our residency, supported by the EU, Camara Municipal Lisboa and BOSS.

These pieces form a mobile outdoor kitchen using our developed bioceramics. The structures adapt to the height of the users and the irregular terrain.

The sculptural forms named “creepy crawlers” appear as sea creatures from an underwater environment: awkward, angular, and slightly unsettling. Situated within the museum gardens, they sit like dreamers or accidental wanderers, uneasy amidst this new environment.

During the summer of 2024, an interesting experience was carried out in the Armenian Caucasus mountains. A group of people somewhere in a very rocky and wild environment gathered to construct an undefined and seemingly useless multi-species artefact.

Loc: Birre, Cascais

A fusion of Japan and Finland. A fresh take on the sauna interior. A bold approach on the exterior. The platformed sauna interior employs movable pebble-like stools designed by Carpenter Paul Boucher, allowing users to arrange freely in the space.

With a background in permaculture and earth construction, our practice challenges dominant architectural models by advancing regenerative, bio-based design. We focus on shifting away from extractive systems toward material practices that restore both ecological and social fabrics.
Grounded in a multicultural approach, we blend traditional knowledge with experimental research to reframe the cultural relevance of biodesign.
We see material choices as central to architectural responsibility. Regenerative design demands not only technical innovation but a broader cultural shift in how we build.
